MS-DOS Mode Super Easy
On of the most frequently "tech support" question I get is about running DOS games in Windows 9x. Setting up Windows is quite straight forward. Even if you haven't used it before you can install it without many issues as the GUI makes it easy. Finding and installing drivers can take a bit more time, but most decent motherboards have the drivers still on the manufacturers website.
But then you want to try some DOS games. Many will work from within Windows, but many won't. So you shut the machine down into MS-DOS mode, but find that you don't have a mouse, the CD-ROM doesn't work and the game doesn't start because of memory configuration issues.
So I made it super easy for anyone that just wants a working MS-DOS mode. Below are DOS drivers for the mouse and CD-ROM, as well as a pre-configured MS-DOS mode .PIF file that you just need to double click. The machine will then restart into MS-DOS mode, show you the familiar start-up menu and load mouse and CD-ROM drivers. If your sound card installed DOS drivers into DOSSTART.BAT, it will load those also!

Extract into C:\DRIVERS. This is for the optical drive (CD or DVD) and mouse

Put the .PIF file onto your desktop. Just double click and it will restart your PC into proper MS-DOS mode!
It will also process DOSSTART.BAT, which often has the files for your sound card. The Aureal Vortex 2, Turble Beach Santa Cruz and the Audician 32 Pus for example do this. |
