Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI Sound Card
The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is a PCI Sound Card featuring the Crystal CS4630 Chip. I see this card as a really good all-rounder, a Jack of All Trades, but Master of none. Aureal does A3D better, Creative does EAX better and ISA sound cards do DOS better. But the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sounds very good, a very quiet card, it does A3D and EAX and even comes with basic DOS compatibility.
Highlights are the VersaJack, which is a configurable port that can configured as input, or output, even digital. It also has a wavetable header, a nice addition, letting you connect a General MIDI wavetable board for better music in supporting games.
I really like the compact Windows 98 SE drivers. They install quickly and without any fuss. To get DOS compatibility, you need to access the Santa Cruz control panel and enable DOS compatibility, which will load a driver for DOS Prompt, as well as MS-DOS Mode.
FM music quality is average, so is compatibility. It doesn't compete with the best PCI DOS sounds cards, the YAMAHA YMF and ESS Solo-1, but as mentioned above, it is a great all-round, with excellent sound quality and support for all the audio APIs from the Windows 98 era!
